How the day runs
Auckland lives by the water. A day out here might be a ferry to Devonport, a walk up one of the volcanic cones for the view, or an afternoon at a beach on the west coast. Family occasions are relaxed — a barbecue in the garden is common — and dinner is from about seven. Dress is casual, and smart-casual is more than enough for a family meal.
Getting around
Most of the city moves by car, and the motorways near the harbour bridge are slow at rush hour. The ferries are the pleasant exception: Devonport is about twelve minutes from the downtown terminal and Waiheke Island about forty. Visiting family in the suburbs usually means a drive, so agree how you are getting there before the day.
When Auckland is busiest
Summer, December to February, is holiday season: Christmas is often spent outdoors, and much of the city goes to the beach until mid-January. Auckland Anniversary weekend at the end of January brings a regatta on the harbour. Diwali and Lunar New Year are both marked with large public festivals. Winter is mild and wet, and Matariki, the Māori New Year public holiday, falls in June or July.

Questions about Auckland
I'm visiting family for Christmas in Auckland. What is it like?
Summery and relaxed. Christmas falls in the holidays here, lunch is often outside, and many families head to the beach afterwards. Agree in the plan when you arrive and leave, and bring something for the sun.
What's a good day out?
The ferry to Devonport and a walk up its volcanic hill, or a longer crossing to Waiheke Island for the day. Either way the harbour does the work, and there is plenty of time to talk.
Where should we meet?
Britomart, beside the ferry terminal, or a café on Ponsonby Road. Both are central, public and easy to find.
