How the day runs

Vancouver is an outdoor city with an early bedtime. A good day here is a walk on the seawall, lunch on Granville Island and an afternoon in Stanley Park or on a beach in Kitsilano; dinner is from half past six. Clothing is casual and practical — a rain jacket is normal everywhere — and family meals rarely call for more than smart-casual.

Getting around

The SkyTrain connects downtown with Richmond, Burnaby and the airport, and the SeaBus crosses to North Vancouver in about twelve minutes. Small ferries cross False Creek to Granville Island. Downtown is compact enough to walk, and the seawall runs all the way round Stanley Park. Family in the suburbs usually means a SkyTrain ride or a short drive.

When Vancouver is busiest

Summer is the city at its best: dry, bright and busy, with fireworks over English Bay in late July and early August. The rainy season, October to March, moves days indoors. Lunar New Year is a major celebration here, with a parade through Chinatown, and Christmas brings family gatherings and light displays across the city.

Questions about Vancouver

Is Lunar New Year a busy time to visit family?

Very. Vancouver has a large Chinese community, the Chinatown parade is one of the city's big days, and family dinners fill the calendar. Book early, and tell us which day you need and where the family is.

What's a good rainy-day plan?

Granville Island's covered market, a gallery, a long lunch and a short walk when it eases. Rain here is usually light and steady, so a good jacket keeps most plans intact.

Where should we meet?

A café in Gastown or Kitsilano — public, easy to reach and a short walk from the water.
