How the day runs
Taipei grazes rather than sits down. Breakfast shops are open by six, the afternoon slides by in tea houses, and from around six in the evening the night markets — Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia — keep going until nearly midnight. A day here is easy to fill with small meals and walking between them, which suits a visit where you are still getting to know each other. Even in Xinyi people dress casually, nobody expects a tip, and sitting down in a convenience store with a drink is perfectly normal.
Getting around
One EasyCard covers the MRT, the buses and the YouBike bicycles. The MRT is spotless, inexpensive, labelled in English and runs until about midnight. Older streets have covered arcades along the shopfronts — in a city with this much rain, that shapes where a day can go. For an afternoon above the city, the Maokong gondola reaches the tea houses in the hills in about twenty minutes, and the steps up Elephant Mountain take roughly the same time but are a real climb, not an amble.
When Taipei is busiest
The best months are October to December: dry, cool and clear. May and June bring the plum rains, weeks of drizzle and grey. Summer is hot and humid, and from July to September typhoons are possible — when one comes, the city shuts for the day and says so the evening before. Winter stays mild but damp, which is when the hot springs at Beitou, a short branch off the red line, make the obvious afternoon. Lunar New Year sends people home to their families for several days, and those are the days family visits cluster.

Questions about Taipei
Does a night market work for a first day together?
For an hour, very well. It is noisy, but sharing plates takes care of any awkward pauses. Afterwards most people drift to a tea house or a quieter café nearby. If crowds bother you, Ningxia is gentler than Shilin.
Is Elephant Mountain worth putting in the plan?
In cool weather, yes: twenty minutes of steep steps for the view over Taipei 101 at dusk. Say so in the plan so she wears the right shoes. In the humidity of August it is harder work than it looks on a map.
What if a typhoon lands on the day we booked?
Then nothing outdoors happens, and the city decides that the evening before. Between July and September it is worth agreeing an indoor version of the day — or a second day on the calendar — when you first make the plan.
