How the day runs
Barcelona eats late, though a little earlier than Madrid — dinner from nine is normal. The city is relaxed and Mediterranean, less formal than its size suggests, and overdressing stands out more than the opposite. A day might combine a market, the Gothic Quarter's lanes, a long lunch and the beach in the late afternoon.
Getting around
The metro is excellent: until midnight on weekdays, later on Fridays and all night on Saturdays. The Eixample's grid makes walking easy, and the beach is part of the city rather than a trip out of it.
When Barcelona is busiest
May, June, September and October are the best months. July and August are hot and very busy with visitors, when the quieter squares of Gràcia are usually a better choice. Christmas is the family season, and Sant Jordi on 23 April fills the streets with books and roses.
