How the day runs
Milan's day ends with aperitivo, between half past six and half past eight: a drink served with enough food that it often replaces dinner. When there is a proper dinner it starts around half past eight. It is the best-dressed city in Italy and knows it, so a family lunch here deserves a little effort. Sunday is for long lunches and a walk along the canals.
Getting around
The metro is efficient and runs until around midnight. The centre is compact and easy on foot, and the Navigli, the canal district, is a short tram ride away and worth the trip for the end of the day.
When Milan is busiest
February and September fashion weeks and the Salone del Mobile in April fill the city to the brim. August is hot and quiet, with many places closed for holidays. Christmas and Easter are the big family occasions, when long lunches with relatives are the rule.

Questions about Milan
Is aperitivo a good way to end the day?
It is the most Milanese way. A drink with a generous spread of food, in public and without the commitment of a long dinner — a relaxed close to a day together.
Should we avoid fashion week?
If you can. During the February and September weeks the city is full and everything needs more notice. Other weeks a few days is usually enough.
Where should the day begin?
Brera, for its quiet streets and cafés, or Isola if the family lives to the north. Both are public, walkable and close to the metro.
