Where to meet in Marseille

  • Le Panier
  • the Vieux-Port
  • the Cours Julien
  • La Joliette

How the day runs

Marseille is relaxed and proud of it — it would rather be called anything than formal. Dinner is around eight, the Vieux-Port stays busy late, and people dress for the heat rather than for show. The city stretches along its coast from north to south instead of spreading out from one centre, so a good day picks one part of the shore and settles there.

Getting around

Two metro lines and three tram routes cover the centre; the metro stops earlier in the evening than Paris's, so the last ride home is often a taxi. The centre is walkable but hilly. What surprises visitors is the length of the city: the calanques at the southern end are within Marseille itself and still more than an hour from the Vieux-Port.

When Marseille is busiest

The sea stays warm into late September, which makes early autumn better than high summer; July and August are hot and crowded. The mistral, a dry north wind, can blow for three days, leaving bright light and a blustery seafront. From June to September the calanques can close on days of high fire risk, announced the evening before. Christmas brings families together, and the santon fairs selling crib figures are a Provençal tradition of the season.

Questions about Marseille

Where should we spend the first hour?

Le Panier or the Cours Julien. Both are small, easy on foot and full of places to sit without committing to a meal. Meet at the Vieux-Port if you like, since everyone can find it, but move on — it is a landmark more than a place to spend the day.

Can the calanques be part of our day?

Often, though not always. The national park is reached by bus and then a walk, or by boat from the Vieux-Port, and in summer it closes on high fire-risk days. Plan it with a second option ready.

What does the mistral change?

Mostly the seafront. When it blows, the light is beautiful and the waterfront is uncomfortable, so move the day into the sheltered streets of Le Panier or inland, and keep the coast for a calmer day.
