How the day runs
Madrid keeps the latest hours in Europe: lunch is around two, dinner rarely before nine, and ten is perfectly ordinary. Start at eight and you will be early for everyone. Dress is smart, particularly in Salamanca, and a family lunch on Sunday can easily take the whole afternoon.
Getting around
The Metro runs until about half past one, and central Madrid is compact enough to walk from one neighbourhood to the next. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced for western Europe. The Retiro park is a natural centre for a day out.
When Madrid is busiest
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. July and August are very hot and much of the city leaves on holiday. Christmas runs until Three Kings on 6 January, which in Spain is as much a family day as Christmas itself.

Why does everything start so late?
That is Madrid's clock. Dinner at half past nine is normal, and many places do not fill until after ten. An earlier day is fine — just plan the meals around it.
Where should we meet?
La Latina for a daytime start, or Salamanca for something calmer and more polished. Malasaña and Chueca are livelier — great or not, depending on the day you want.
