How the day runs
Rio is far more relaxed than São Paulo. In the day, beachwear on the promenade is normal; in the evening, smart-casual is enough. Dinner is around eight or nine, later at weekends. A day here might start with a walk along Ipanema, take in Santa Teresa's streets and finish with the view at sunset.
Getting around
The metro links the southern beach districts and the centre and is the easiest way between Ipanema, Copacabana and downtown. Ride-hailing does the rest. Santa Teresa is up a steep hill — worth the trip, but not on foot.
When Rio de Janeiro is busiest
Summer, from December to March, is the busiest time, and Carnival is the biggest event of the year, booked months ahead. Christmas and New Year on the beach are when families come together. From May the cooler months bring clear skies and fewer crowds.
