How the day runs
A day in Bali follows the sun. Mornings are for the rice terraces around Ubud or a temple visit before the heat, afternoons slow down, and the west coast gathers for sunset a little after six, with dinner from seven. Clothing is light and casual, but temples need a sarong, a sash and covered shoulders. Ceremonies and processions are part of everyday life, and it is normal for one to close a road for a while.
Getting around
There are no trains and very little public transport. A car with a driver for the whole day is the comfortable way to see the island, and scooters handle most short trips. Distances take longer than they look: Seminyak to Ubud is an hour or more, and the roads around Canggu fill up in the late afternoon. Ride-hailing apps work in many places but not all, because some villages reserve pickups for local drivers.
When Bali is busiest
The dry season, April to October, is the busiest, especially July and August. The wet season, November to March, brings heavy afternoon showers that soon pass and greener landscapes. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, usually in March, shuts the island for twenty-four hours — no one goes out and the airport closes — and Galungan, which comes round every 210 days, lines the streets with tall bamboo penjor.

Questions about Bali
What should we plan for a day in Ubud?
An early start and a driver. The rice terraces and temples are best in the morning, the town has plenty of cafés for lunch, and leaving before the late-afternoon traffic makes the drive back easier.
What happens on Nyepi?
Everything stops for a day, usually in March: nobody goes out, businesses close and the airport shuts. The evening before is the opposite, with ogoh-ogoh parades in the streets. Plan any trip around it.
Where should we meet?
Somewhere public and easy to reach — a café in Sanur or Seminyak — close to where the day begins.
