How the day runs
Hamburg is reserved in a friendly way — well dressed but never showy, nearer Copenhagen than Munich in temperament. A day here often begins with a walk rather than a table: around the Alster in the morning, along the harbour after lunch. Dinner is usually between seven and nine. A Sunday family lunch is followed, as often as not, by a stroll by the water whatever the weather.
Getting around
At weekends the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run through the night. The two lakes of the Alster and the long harbour front give the city two ready-made walking routes, pleasant in nearly any weather — useful, because Hamburg has a lot of weather. The harbour ferries run on the ordinary transport ticket and make an easy half-hour on the water.
When Hamburg is busiest
May to September is the comfortable half of the year; the harbour's birthday celebration in May is the biggest weekend. Winter is grey and wet rather than freezing, so a winter day leans indoors — concerts, theatres, museums. December's Christmas markets and the family days around Christmas are the busiest weeks for visits home.

Questions about Hamburg
What fills a day in Hamburg besides a meal?
Plenty: the harbour and the Alster for long walks, a ferry along the Elbe, the Elbphilharmonie's plaza and concert programme, and one of Europe's biggest musical theatre scenes for an evening.
Will the weather spoil the plan?
Seldom. Rain is so normal here that the city is built around it. Plan the day with an indoor half — a museum or a concert — and the sky stops mattering.
Where should we meet?
A café in Eppendorf or the Schanzenviertel, or at the Jungfernstieg on the Alster — public, central and close to the U-Bahn.
