How the day runs
San Francisco is a walking city, and a good day here is on foot: from the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero, up through North Beach, or across Golden Gate Park towards the ocean. Dinner is early, from half past six. Dress casually but in layers, because the fog can drop the temperature quickly in the afternoon. A family meal rarely needs more than smart-casual.
Getting around
Muni buses, streetcars and cable cars cover the city, and BART runs under Market Street to the East Bay and the airport; a Clipper card or a phone pays for all of them. The hills are steep, so plan routes around them. Family across the bay or down the peninsula is usually a BART or Caltrain ride away, and BART stops around midnight.
When San Francisco is busiest
September and October are the warmest, clearest months, and Fleet Week fills the waterfront in October. Summer is often cool and foggy by the ocean. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the big family weeks, and Lunar New Year brings a large parade through Chinatown and Union Square.

Questions about San Francisco
I'm taking someone home for Thanksgiving. What should she know?
That it is the biggest family meal of the American year: a long afternoon at the table, often with many relatives at once. Agree in the plan when you arrive and leave, who will be there and how you know each other, and she will be ready.
What's a good day out?
Walk from the Ferry Building along the waterfront, take the ferry to Sausalito for lunch and come back as the light goes. It is public and easy, with the Golden Gate Bridge in view most of the way.
Where should we meet?
A café in Hayes Valley or North Beach, both on level ground and easy to reach by Muni.
