Where to meet in Moscow
- Patriarch Ponds
- the Arbat
- Kitay-Gorod
- Zamoskvorechye
How the day runs
Moscow dresses up more than most European capitals — smart is the norm in the centre, and for half the year a good coat makes most of the impression. Dinner is between seven and nine. A day here can be a gallery, a long lunch, the parks in summer and a theatre in winter.
Getting around
The Metro runs until around one in the morning, is fast and inexpensive, and its stations are sights in themselves. The centre is walkable in summer; in winter, plan short walks between warm places.
When Moscow is busiest
Summer is by far the easiest season. The New Year holidays in early January are the great family time, when much of the country takes days off together. Deep winter is cold enough that a day moves almost wholly indoors.

Questions about Moscow
Does winter rule out a day out?
No, but it changes the plan. From December to February the day is built around indoor places — a long lunch, a gallery, a theatre — rather than walks between them.
Can she join a New Year family visit?
Yes. It is the main family holiday here, so ask early, agree the day in writing — the visit, how you met, when it ends — and meet somewhere public first.
Where should we meet?
Near Patriarch Ponds or in Zamoskvorechye — calm, central and close to the Metro.
