How the day runs

Cape Town's summer days are long and outdoorsy. A morning on the Sea Point promenade, an afternoon in the winelands and a sundowner at Camps Bay or Signal Hill make a classic local day, with dinner from about seven. Clothing is relaxed — bring a layer for the wind. Family gatherings are often a braai, the South African barbecue, in someone's garden.

Getting around

Ride-hailing is the easiest way around the city, and door to door after dark is the standard advice. MyCiTi buses run into the centre and along the Atlantic seaboard. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are about an hour's drive, so a day in the winelands needs a car and a driver.

When Cape Town is busiest

Summer, November to March, is dry, sunny and busy, and December to early January is the main holiday season, when families gather and the city is full. The south-easter can blow hard in summer and closes the Table Mountain cableway when it does. Winter, June to August, is rainy, green and quieter.

Questions about Cape Town

What is a family braai like?

Relaxed and long: a fire, food cooked over the coals and an afternoon of conversation in the garden. Dress casually, bring something to share if the family expects it, and agree in the plan how long you stay.

Is a winelands day a good plan?

One of the best. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are about an hour away, and a long lunch among the vineyards makes a full, easy day. A driver keeps it comfortable.

Where should we meet?

The V&A Waterfront or Sea Point — both public, well lit and easy to reach by car.
