How the day runs
Tokyo dines early, usually between half past six and eight, and being on time matters more than almost anywhere — arrive at the meeting point a few minutes early. Neat, understated clothes read better than anything flashy, and a visit to a family home means shoes off at the door. A day here can be a garden, a museum, a department store food hall and a quiet dinner.
Getting around
Trains are the city's backbone, and their one limit matters: they stop around midnight and start again at about five. Plan the day to end before the last train, or agree on a taxi home, which is easy but expensive. A day that stays on one or two lines is simplest.
When Tokyo is busiest
Cherry blossom, from late March into early April, and autumn colour, from late October into November, are the two peaks — short, and busy. The New Year holidays and Obon in mid-August are when people return to their families, and Golden Week in early May fills every train.

Questions about Tokyo
I am visiting family for the New Year or Obon. How should we plan?
Those are the weeks the whole country travels home, so ask early and allow for crowded trains. Agree the day in writing — the visit, how you met, when the day ends — and meet at a station or café first so you arrive together.
What if we are still out at midnight?
Decide in advance. The trains stop around midnight, so either the day ends before then or it ends with a taxi — straightforward but not inexpensive.
Where should we meet?
Somewhere calm and easy to find near your line — a café in Nakameguro or Omotesandō rather than the crowds at Shibuya crossing.
