How the day runs
Lunch in Naples is long and dinner is late — nine is an ordinary time to sit down, and no one hurries you up from the table afterwards. People look put together without looking formal: a good jacket gets noticed, a suit would be out of place. When a day here has no fixed plan, it ends up by the sea, because a slow walk along the waterfront is the city's own idea of an afternoon well spent.
Getting around
Vomero sits on the hill above the centre, and three of the city's four funicular railways go up to it; the alternative is a lot of stairs. Line 1 of the metro is worth a ride for its own sake, since several stations were designed by artists. Both the funiculars and the metro close earlier than a full day often runs, so plan on a taxi for the last trip. In the historic centre, walk: the lanes are tight, scooters squeeze through, and cars crawl.
When Naples is busiest
The steady months are April to June and September to October — warm on the waterfront and clear enough to see Vesuvius across the bay. In August it is hot, much of the city goes away and small family-run places shut for their own break. Winter is mild and rainy, ferries to the islands run less often, and hydrofoils stop entirely in rough seas. Christmas is a family season here, and the presepe makers' street in the historic centre is at its busiest in December.

Questions about Naples
Where should we meet before the day starts?
Chiaia or the Lungomare. Both are flat and open, easy to find and easy to walk from, and the seafront gives you something to do while you get comfortable. Save the dense lanes of the historic centre for later in the day.
Can we spend the day out at Pompeii or Sorrento?
Yes — it is one of the most popular ways to spend a day from Naples. The Circumvesuviana train gets to both in about an hour; it runs often but can be crowded. The islands go by boat from the port and depend on the sea, so keep a plan B.
How far ahead should I ask?
For most days a few days ahead is fine. Weekends in spring and early autumn go first, and a day built around a boat crossing or Pompeii is better fixed early rather than pieced together at the last minute.
