Where to meet in Porto
- the Ribeira
- Cedofeita
- Foz do Douro
- Bonfim
How the day runs
Porto works by day and relaxes in the evening. Dinner is around eight, simpler and less expensive than in Lisbon, and the north dresses a touch more conservatively than the south — good to know before a family lunch. Everything leans towards the Douro: the city climbs steeply from both banks, and choosing where to meet is mostly choosing how much climbing you want in the day.
Getting around
Porto's metro is mostly light rail running above ground, and its best stretch crosses the top level of the Dom Luís I bridge; cars use the lower level, and people can walk across either — the walk is the best free view in town. The old trams still run, and line 1 along the river to Foz do Douro is a real service, not just a museum piece. The hills are the thing a map hides, which is why there is a funicular next to the bridge.
When Porto is busiest
May to September is the dependable half of the year. The Atlantic brings more rain than Lisbon gets, and from November to March it settles in, moving a day indoors without emptying it. São João, the night of 23 June, has the whole city out in the streets until morning — not a day for anything quiet. Christmas is a family season here, as everywhere in Portugal.

Questions about Porto
Should Vila Nova de Gaia be part of the day?
Usually, yes. Gaia is across the river — officially its own city, five minutes' walk over the bridge — and it has the port lodges and the best view back at Porto. Go in the afternoon; the walk back is nicer in daylight.
How steep is it, really?
Enough to plan for. The Ribeira is at the river and the centre is far above, linked by stairs, a funicular or a long detour. If you would rather avoid the climb, meet in Foz do Douro or Cedofeita, which are flatter.
Is São João a good day to book?
Only if the festival is the plan. The night of 23 June fills every street, and a quiet family day is hard to arrange around it. Any other week of June is calmer.
