How the day runs
Hong Kong dresses smartly — it is a business city first — and keeps going late after dinner, which is usually between seven and nine. Weekend days often begin with dim sum, and a family meal is a big round table with several generations. Hikes and outlying islands are only a short trip from the towers.
Getting around
The MTR is fast, simple and runs until around one in the morning. The Star Ferry between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon takes about ten minutes and is a pleasure in itself, not just a crossing.
When Hong Kong is busiest
October to December is the best season: warm, dry and clear. Summer is hot, humid and typhoon season, so July and August plans stay flexible and mostly indoors. Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival are the family occasions, when relatives gather for meals and visits.

Questions about Hong Kong
Can she join me for Lunar New Year visits?
Yes. Tell us which day of the festival, who you will visit and what is expected, and agree the plan in writing. Red-envelope customs and who gives what are worth settling in the brief.
Should the day be on the Island or in Kowloon?
Either, and crossing by ferry is half the fun. Central and Sheung Wan are quieter and more polished; Tsim Sha Tsui has the harbour view back to the Island.
What if a typhoon signal goes up?
Then much of the city stops for the day. Between July and September, agree an indoor version of the plan or a second day when you book.
