How the day runs

A day in Sydney starts outside. Breakfast is a proper social meal here, the coastal path from Bondi to Coogee takes about two hours at an easy pace, and a ferry across the harbour turns an afternoon into an outing without any planning. Family lunches run long, often in a garden or on a balcony, and dinner is early, between seven and half past eight. Dress is casual for almost everything; for a family meal, smart-casual is plenty.

Getting around

One Opal card or a contactless bank card covers the trains, the metro, light rail, buses and ferries. The ferries leave from Circular Quay — Manly is about half an hour across the harbour — and the trip is worth taking for its own sake. Sydney spreads wide, and visiting family in the suburbs usually means a train or a car; the eastern suburbs and the inner west are far enough apart that a day is best planned around one of them.

When Sydney is busiest

December is the busiest month: Christmas Day is often spent outdoors, sometimes on the beach, and New Year's Eve ends the year with fireworks over the harbour. Summer warmth lasts into March. Vivid lights up the city from late May into June, a good reason for an evening walk by the water, and Lunar New Year brings celebrations to Chinatown and Haymarket each January or February.

Questions about Sydney

I'm bringing someone to a family Christmas in Sydney. What should we expect?

A warm day, and probably an outdoor one — Christmas falls in summer here, and lunch in a garden or by the water is common. Agree in the plan when you arrive, who will be there and how long you stay, and pack something for the heat.

What makes a good day out?

The harbour. Take the ferry to Manly, walk along the beach and come back as the light changes on the skyline, or follow the coastal path south from Bondi. Both are easy and public, and leave plenty of time for talking.

Where should we meet?

A café in Surry Hills or Paddington, or by the ferry wharf if the day starts on the water. Somewhere public, easy to find and close to the first plan of the day.
