How the day runs
Nice lives by the sea, not by office hours. From May through October nearly everything happens outdoors, dinner starts around eight, and only a few places on the seafront expect anyone to dress up. The old town and the modern centre are a short walk apart, so the plan can change halfway through the afternoon without a taxi.
Getting around
Three tram lines do most of the work, one linking the airport to the centre — and the airport is only a few kilometres west along the shore, so a visitor can be in town and ready for the day very quickly. The centre itself is flat and compact; hill districts such as Cimiez are a bus ride up. For a day further along the coast, the train east towards Villefranche, Monaco and Menton runs right along the water and beats any car.
When Nice is busiest
The good season runs a long way, from March to November, and October has the finest light. In May the whole coast fills for two events that are not in Nice at all: the Cannes film festival and the Monaco Grand Prix. February's carnival, which lasts two weeks, does the same in the city itself. Christmas is when local families gather, and the long summer holidays bring visitors from all over France.

Questions about Nice
Where is a good first hour together in Nice?
The Cours Saleya in Vieux Nice in the morning, when the flower and produce market is up (antiques on Mondays). It is a short walk and a long, easy browse, which takes the edge off meeting someone new.
Can the day be spent along the coast?
Easily. The coastal railway stops close to the water in Villefranche, Monaco and Menton, so a full day needs no driving, and the trip back fits inside the agreed day.
Should we plan a beach afternoon?
Know first that the Baie des Anges is pebbles from end to end, not sand — clear water, a hard place to lie down. The Promenade is often the better choice: miles long and lively at any hour.
