How the day runs
Munich sits halfway between Berlin's ease and Vienna's formality, so smart-casual is the safe choice almost anywhere. Dinner is around seven to nine. Beer gardens are an everyday daytime meeting place for families, not just a summer curiosity, and a Sunday here often means a long lunch and a walk in the English Garden.
Getting around
U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains are quick and dependable, with night services at weekends. The centre is easy on foot, and the English Garden reaches right into it, so an afternoon outdoors needs no planning at all. The lakes and the Alps are close enough for a day trip by train.
When Munich is busiest
Oktoberfest, from late September into early October, fills the city and is planned months ahead. December has the Christmas markets and the family Christmas that follows; summer belongs to the beer gardens, the parks and the river Isar.

Questions about Munich
Is a beer garden a good place to spend the afternoon?
Very much so. It is public, easy-going and entirely normal to stay for hours — much easier for a first day together than a formal meal.
What if my day falls during Oktoberfest?
Ask months ahead rather than weeks, because the whole city is full. If the festival is part of the day, tent tables need reserving well in advance — put the day and the plan in your request.
Can we take a day trip from Munich?
Yes, as long as it fits in one full day. The lakes south of the city and the Alpine foothills are an easy train ride; agree the route and the time back in the plan.
